About Rick Chiantaretto

1005771_573547986029946_976679398_n

I've often been accused of having done more in my life than the average 30 year old, but if I were completely honest I'd have to tell you my secret: I'm really 392.

So after all this time, I'm a pretty crappy writer.

I have one book published but out of print, one coming out soon, and a bunch half written (when you have eternity, where's the reason to rush?). I've been favorably reviewed by horror greats like Nancy Kilpatrick, and my how-to-write-horror articles have been quoted in scholarly (aka community college freshmen's) papers.

I enjoy the occasional Bloody Mary, although a Bloody Kathy or Susan will suffice. Mostly, I just try to keep a low profile so people don't figure out who I REALLY am.

BOOK TOUR, REVIEW & GIVEAWAY -- Anti-Theist by Christopher Mallard (Religion/Philosphy)

Anti-Theist - Christopher Mallard

Christopher MallardAuthor Bio

The majority of my adult life was spent working in the oilfields of west Texas. In my spare time I taught myself how to work on computers and eventually turned it into a small business which I work from home. What does any of this have to do with religion? Nothing. Where are my degrees in theology, biology, astronomy and philosophy? I don’t have any. I am your common average Joe and that’s exactly the type of reader I’m trying to reach. Does it take a degree in theology to open the bible and see the stories told within as being immoral and violent? Can the common man not see how the religions of the world have done and are still doing immeasurable harm to society?

Genre: Religion, Philosophy
Publisher: Amazon Digital Services
Release Date: 5/15/2013

Synopsis:
This book is the first in a series essentially arguing about the lack of abject morality of religion and its dangers. It’s broken down so each chapter is a topic on its own covering a variety subjects.

Excerpt
From Chapter 4 – And God Made Woman
“This story (of the Levite) differs from the one about Lot because even though the horde apparently refused the virgin and the concubine, the Levite sent his new bride out anyway. And then he apparently went to bed. All that walking through the desert and tossing the pre-pubescent girl he loves, or at least the pre-pubescent girl he just bought, out to her rape and demise takes a toll on a person. No further thought of her from him till he trips over her on his way leaving town. If you keep reading the story you learn it's good he got a solid night's rest. He was so insulted that the hordes of horny homosexual Hebrews had tried to rape him and killed his concubine that he personally cut up her body and sent the parts of her to every tribe of Israel.
Why do you suppose it was that these men had no want for a virgin female? Perhaps these young girls were particularly homely? No, I suspect the reason was because the Israelites were allowed to keep virgin females for themselves as the spoils of war. Virgin girls were old hat to them. A disposable commodity, especially in times of war. I suspect the reason the concubine was sent out and not the virgin was because between the two the concubine, with her lack of an intact hymen, was the one with the least value.
And what happens to you when you die, ladies? What evidence in the bible does it give you that women will find equal treatment in the afterlife? Women are given object/ slave status throughout the bible. Women are almost always portrayed as wicked. Many of the great men of the bible who fell from grace did so because of the influence of a woman. What makes you think you're going to even be allowed in the presence of God? The 144,000 who are called to sing the song of God are called partly because they have not been 'defiled' with women.
How many female disciples were there? Hmmm. In John 6: 44 after Jesus uses five loaves of bread and two fish and feeds a multitude of people how many people did he feed? It says he fed five thousand MEN. Now, some will argue this was even more of a miracle because they didn't count the women back then, therefore he may have fed closer to ten thousand people but did you notice that little phrase, 'they didn't count women'?
No, Christian ladies have no fear and continue to pray to your God, Jesus, and when you make it to heaven you'll find you have a new body and are reborn. Yes, you'll be a virgin again with the all so precious hymen once again intact. Now I guess you know where all those virgins come from that god gives to the Muslim suicide bombers. Even if the evil God monster of the Abrahamic religions does exist how could you possibly want to follow HIM?

MY REVIEW

I've always been interested in different religions and peoples reviews on religion. To me, religion is mostly the cause of many a war, so I was intrigued to find out what the author thinks atheists and anti-theists also feel.

There are many questions I asked myself whilst reading this book as it is very thought provoking. There are also many statements of fact which re-inforced my thoughts I already had on religion. I won't say what I believe (or don't believe) for fear of being too controversial. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The author himself has no qualms in upsetting anyone. He is a strong anti-theist and I admire him for that. In telling everyone about anti-theists and atheists, at times it is no worse that those preaching every day on the streets; in churches and even on social media. There are many thought provoking statements throughout and some may find them controversial.

"Science flies you to the moon; religion flies you into buildings" Richard Dawkins.

An Atheist - A disbelief in the existence of a deity and the doctrine that there is no deity. Basically a disbelief in a God, any God.

A Theist - Believes in one form of God or another who has a direct hand in the course of the life of the believer.  A personal "God" who lives in the sky and watches them; loves them and judges them; who they are willing to die for and in some cases kill for.

Agnostics - People who aren't sure. They're on the fence and don't know whether there is or isn't a God.

"Isn't an agnostic just an atheist without balls?" Stephen Colbert

Tell people there's an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure" George Carlin.

I think the author is very opinionated. His views are very strong at times. I did think, he's no better than those that knock on my front door and try and preach their religion to me. (Please don't try it as you won't be welcomed in). However, this is what makes the book powerful. I'm not sure how many religious people will read the book, but I think they should.

I have read books on Buddhism, Seikhism, Judaism, Christianity and more as I like to be informed. None of the books have changed my mind and just re-inforced what I think. This book did the same.  Four stars for me, only because I found bits of it repetitive but I did enjoy the debate.

Read this book if you dare!

MY REVIEW

What a wonderful idea this book is for keeping kids active, whilst reading an adventure at the same time.

There are about 32 pages in this lovely picture book, which has great illustrations as you can see above.

Rob is waiting for his Dad to collect him from school. He sits and waits on a bench outside the school. Whilst he's waiting he starts imagining where his Dad might be. Could he be walking the plank on a pirate ship, or could he have gone into space?

Each adventure has a lovely colourful illustration which goes into great detail on one page, and on the opposite page is a diagram of a young boy doing a yoga pose, with a detailed description on how to do the pose, written so a child can understand it, and so it makes it fun. Some of the poses you see you may be familiar with, but how it is described to the child makes it sound like a game, rather than an arduous exercise an adult may endure.

I thought this was a great concept, and well designed to make exercise fun for kids, and also for the adults reading the book with them. Fun for all the family! Highly recommended.

Excerpt:
BROOKLYN BRISKET
Long before my mother was strapped to a wheelchair and fed on beige fluid that dripped into her stomach, she could stand and cook for twenty as easily as I toast a bagel.  She is gone now and often when I think of her on the holidays, I think of all those steaming, braising, frying pots, but mostly I think brisket.
Sometimes it was splashed with a healthy dose of Manischevitz, or served with raisins a-swim in Hunt’s tomato sauce, with whole cranberries or walnuts.  It was packed in brown sugar, and once in a pepper and lemon crust, so tart it make us choke.
But no matter its reception at my mother’s table, her affection for that salted, rinsed, and near bloodless koshered meat never waned.  Now that she is gone, it is a particular brisket I remember, a Brooklyn brisket, of years and years ago.
I was maybe ten, eleven years old, walking with my mother in her mid-thirties, those prime years of her womanhood, when there was about her such health and verve, such an aliveness to the way she moved.  It gleamed on her skin that day, and in her eyes, and in the reddish upsweep of her hair.
Right off the train from A & S on Fulton Street, we walked to our neighborhood butcher—she in one of her cotton printed dresses, gored skirt, self-belt, and short sleeves that showed the freckles on her arms, and me, sweating in the new wool of my light blue princess coat with the navy blue velvet collar.
With a handkerchief, my mother patted the swell of her breasts showing out of the sweetheart collar of her dress. “It must be ninety degrees,” she complained. “For the life of me I can’t understand why you’re wearing that coat.”
“Because…” I said, smoothing my collar, tapping each velvet button, “If they put it in the box it would get all wrinkled.”
Behind a wooden table in the butcher store, a man with black curls and a yarmulke on his head smiled right away at my mother, little dents appearing in his cheeks.  He handed me a thick slice of salami. There on the sawdusted floor I slid, sucking the fat and salt out of the meat, looking down at my buttons, not up at the slanted-top display case, upon which parsleyed trays lay, filled with the meat and bones of animals.
Bloodied apron around his waist, a yarmulke on his curls, he sharpened his big knife on a silver rod, wrist swiveling, red lines of blood in his knuckles, all the time looking at my mother, who sometimes looked at him, and then looked away. His eyes shining, the dents in his cheeks deepened. I did not like his big shiny smile on my mother, so instead I watched the blade slice into the cape of fat atop the brisket’s hump.
“Lean,” my mother said, “make it nice and lean.”
His eyes at the top of her dress, “Fat,” he said. “You want a little fat on it, that’s where the taste is.”

Excerpt

“What about you?” she inquired. “Was seafaring everything you had dreamed?”
“Everything and more.”
She allowed the wry note, the intriguing hint of regret in his voice to float away on the cool night air. Whatever had made him jaded—a swordfight with pirates, an exotic love affair, changeling prices for tea exports—he had clearly come out of it stronger, richer, better. He had no need of her, which was why she would never accept his proposal. Back then, he had worshipped her. Which was as it should have been, considering how much she’d exalted him. Now she was but an afterthought, a backhanded proposal.
And if she said yes? He would stash her in some over-architectured, under-gardened townhouse in London. Only take her out when he wanted to play, as if she was some pet, like one of his cats only without claws.
No.
They lay in silence, neither willing to share the shadows of their time apart. Once, nothing had been secret between them, nothing sacred. Now they were strangers.
But she hadn’t let go of his hand. His fingers slid through hers with startling familiarity. Her mind made all sorts of claims about this intruder in her bedroom, but her fingertips—they knew him by touch. Bunched skin on his knuckles, and smooth, short-cropped nails. Coarse hair on the back of his hand that had appeared one day in their youth, as if by magic. That was the back of his hand, the known, well-mapped terrain. His palm was a different story, one of adventure and hardship, of darkness and secrets. Calluses had formed over calluses, her explorations told her. Mountains of thick skin, formed to protect him. Valleys in a man too young to wrinkle—it was experience that had aged him more than the years.
While she explored him, he explored her right back. Hands only. His thumb fanned the delta between her forefinger and thumb. Back and forth; she knew he’d found the scar.
His fingers tightened on her briefly before relaxing. “What did this?”
“A cat,” she admitted. “The dislike seems to be mutual.”
“Tell me what happened.”
“Well, it was a boating party. Only I hadn’t read it right in the invitation. I thought it was a picnic. So I arrived with a large basket filled with cold salads and Poppet.”
He tensed beside her, but she couldn’t credit that he was really worried. Like him, whatever social trials she had faced in the interim, she had clearly come out just fine. Aside from tree climbing mishaps.
“I couldn’t very well leave him on the shore, so I brought him on board with me. I thought it would be fine. He had his basket to stay in, and then his leash—”
“You have a leash. For your cat.”
“It’s more of a ribbon. A thick ribbon that ties around his neck and has a handle. So, yes, a leash. He doesn’t mind, usually. He likes to explore, on land. But we hit choppy waters, and he climbed up my neck. There was a bit of struggle. His nail jammed through the skin.” She shrugged. “I had to feed him bits of chicken until he relaxed enough to sheath his claws.”
He made a choking sound. Laughing, she supposed. Ah, well. A smile played at her lips. It had been funny, in a most painful and humiliating way. At some point, she had given up pretending to be a graceful, poised young lady, and accepted her growing reputation as a rather clumsy adventuress. She had even seemed to attract suitors that way. They wanted to protect her.
They wanted to imprison her.
All she’d wanted was someone to have adventures with.
“I got invited to all the boating parties after that,” she added. “But I never took Poppet again.”
“See? I always said you’d be the center of the party.”
“Yes, and I thought you meant that in a nice way.”
He laughed. “I did. I do.”
He tugged her closer between the linens. His face hovered next to hers. She could feel his breath mingling with hers, but the dark kept him hidden. She didn’t know where he was exactly, where his mouth was, until he kissed her.
His lips found hers unerringly, as if his vision was stronger than hers. He slanted his head to meet her more firmly, his warmth, his knowledge, impossibly intimate. For a moment, she panicked, the same way she had done for every terrace liberty and courtyard peck she’d ever allowed since him. But then the taste of him flooded her senses, memory Hale and this living, breathing stranger merging into one. Who are you? she thought, and then immediately, I know you, I feel you.
I love you.
How could the years fall away so quickly? But she found time had never really stood between them. It had been distance. And now that the miles were crossed, the air evaporated from the room, leaving her stunned with fatalistic joy.
He cupped the back of her neck and kissed down her jaw. She bared her throat to him, knowing, inviting. His lips were tender against the sensitive skin, caressing the hollow at the base of her throat. He reached for the hem of her nightgown, and she jerked in surprise, feeling shock at how fast they were moving…and wonder at how good it still felt.

About The Authors

Nancy Fraser Author (Holiday)  NANCY FRASER

Like most authors, Nancy began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher's pet which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it. In her time away from writing, Nancy dotes on her five grandchildren. She's currently happily single (let's face it, it's difficult to find a man who can live up to her sexy, fictitious heroes) and enjoying life as is for the time being.

Sophia Garrett (Holiday)  SOPHIA GARRETT

Sophia Garrett always knew she wanted to be a writer, and more specifically, a historical romance writer. Her teenage years were spent rabidly gobbling up the newest books from romance icons such as Johanna Lindsey, Sabrina Jefferies, Julie Garwood, and Kathleen E. Woodiweiss. She composed her first romance novel about the American Revolution, in high school. When Sophia is not researching...well, she's always researching! But in her non-working hours she enjoys studying historical events (yes, she's one of those girls), watching documentaries, taking in action-packed dramas at the theatre, and spending as much time as possible with her two young sons collecting bugs, racing Hot Wheels, and smashing things in video games. Her second passion is animals, so much so that at one time she considered a career in veterinary medicine. Chemistry, however, waged war on her sanity, and she decided training horses was far less harmful than trying to manipulate miniscule objects that can't be seen. Setting her sweatshirt on fire in lab might have had something to do with that. She still has her horses but has added a chicken...or two. And a duck. And a (house) pig. And several dogs. And cats. And... who knows what might turn up next! Sophia frequently attends conferences and signing events that take her throughout the United States. In addition, she often presents for her local Romance Writers of America chapters and is available to present to additional authors' groups. Synopsis: Have you ever wondered what could be hiding in the shadows?

Well, for eighteen-year-old Zahara Faraday, she doesn’t have to wonder. You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. The only problem is Zahara, like her father Solomon, is as human as a human being can be whereas her mother, Mia, and her Aunt Catalina, were born as Light Witches. As a family they hunt down rogue supernaturals—creatures who harm humans or who have committed an act against their kingdom.

Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. She plans on doing just that—except when she finds a couple being attacked by fairies, she has no choice but to step in. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. In a heartbeat, her best friend, Becca King, has set her up on a double date with herself and her new crush, Rekesh Saint-Louis, who happens to be the most powerful leader of the biggest Imago Coven in South Florida –supernatural creatures with the ability to control water . . . and suck out human souls.

Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Normal just got a deadlier definition.

SNEAK PEEK
“Is that blood?” Zahara asked eyeing the ground a few steps in front of them.

Becca looked down toward the ground and moved closer to the gloopy stain of red. She bent down and tilted her head to the side. “Looks like blood.”

Zahara kneeled down beside the blood and looked down the hall on the left, which led outside to where all the dumpsters where found. “There’s more down that way,” she directed with a thrust of her chin.

“Oh no, you don’t!” Becca said grabbing onto Zahara’s arm.

“Becks, we have to check out what it is; someone could be hurt.”

Becca was already shaking her head no. “Are you stupid? Follow the path of blood down the dark hallway into the back alley where there can possibly be a body and some killer. It’s too cliché horror movie for my taste. We are not those stupid girls. Let’s go get your parents.” She yanked Zahara back toward the food court, but Zahara pulled her back.

“By the time we get to my parents, explain what we found and they come to investigate, the person in the back alley could be dead and it’ll be our fault for not helping when we could.” Zahara turned around and started walking down the hallway, taking out the dagger from her back pocket. She unclipped the can of pepper spray from the keychain clipped to her pants and tossed it to Becca. “You coming or am I going in alone?”

“Stupid best friend is gonna follow the stupid trail of blood down the stupid hallway with a stupid can of pepper spray and a stupid dagger and she expects us not to get killed,” Becca mumbled through tight teeth as she followed Zahara.

They walked slowly, sticking to the wall so as not to step on the blood. The door leading out to the dumpsters was shut. Zahara leaned back against it and looked at Becca. Becca swallowed hard and gave her a quick nod, shaking the can of pepper spray. Zahara threw the door open and twisted around on her heel as fast as she could. Becca ran outside with the can of pepper spray held high, but they found nothing more than blood on the ground.

Zahara tiptoed around the drops of blood on the ground, walking farther back into the alleyway and stopped as she heard voices.

“Tell us where you’ve hidden it!” a man snapped. Skin slapped against skin and another man cried out.

“I told you, we do not have it!”

Zahara felt her heart bang against her ribcage. She recognized that voice. She moved closer, staying beside one of the dumpsters, and knelt. Becca knelt beside her and took a deep breath.

“That sounds like Eric,” Becca whispered.

“You have one last chance to tell us where you’ve hidden the arrow, Jacobson,” the same male voice threatened.

Zahara had no doubt he meant what he said. She knew she would probably regret this later, but she jumped up and ran around the dumpster, hearing Becca’s faint curse as she did. Three sets of eyes turned to look at her. Eric, one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven, was on his knees, arms bound by the grip of another man standing behind him.

He was tall and slender, enough muscle to show he wasn’t lazy, but he didn’t look strong enough to be able to hold down Eric’s six-foot, four-inch frame, which was nothing but toned, hard muscle. Eric, on the other hand, looked to be in pain. He had slices across his face and his bottom lip was split open. Blood slithered from the open wounds onto the ground.

“Let him go, now!” Zahara demanded. She gripped the dagger handle more tightly, holding it pressed against her thigh.
